Living A Life Unedited

Updated: Jun 18, 2020

Sometimes it's good to go off-script in life and shine a light on your authentic self.

I've never been one who's found it easy to stick to lines in life, and so find myself regularly wandering off-script. At times, it hasn't gone down so well, and my sense of humour and candidness has not been appreciated by some. But most often it's allowed others to see who I am on the inside, and provided permission to those around me to be themselves.

Sure, there's a time and place for certain protocol and etiquette to be adhered to, and we're conditioned to understand what's appropriate for different social settings, including business. There's certain qualities and characteristics expected in circumstances, and agreed behaviours and communication styles are normally sought. But also appreciate the power of authenticity. If you can't be yourself, then who can you be? Certainly, display those qualities expected in a given situation (professionalism, diplomacy, etc.)...but also shine a light into yourself to let others see who 'you' are. In having the courage to expose more of your authentic self, you also allow others to feel more comfortable to do the same. This can help to build trust and foster better-quality communications.

A former colleague is one of the happiest souls I know. I'm privy to some difficulties going on in his life, but he simply doesn't allow hardships to deter his unique zest for daily living. In moments of spontaneous exuberance, he would play a song on his mobile, get up from his desk and burst into dance. Initially, I and other staff were not sure what to make of his impulsive acts of uninhibited joy....especially in an office setting

It wasn't long however, before we were all joining in with him for 'dance moments'. The fun feeling was contagious! He simply had the courage to reveal his fun side, and we felt okay to do the same.

2020 has certainly proved to be a challenging year. Events seen a degree of collective uncertainty globally, creating considerable stress as a result. More than ever it's important to be courageous and show people your authentic self. It's okay to be 'you' and shine a light on those around you.

Stay positive. Stay healthy 😊💚
